__________*__________The Papyrus plant
_________*_________ |
The Papyrus is an aquatic plant found on the banks of the River Nile, where its need for plenty of sun and water are in abundance. The Ancient Egyptian used this plant to make the first paper which contribueted to the building of the greatest civilization of Ancient Egypt. Writing material made from the papyrus plant was called " pa-per-aa" in the language of the Ancient Pharaohs. The hot African climate is ideal for the growth of the papyrus where it reaches heights of 12-16 ft and 2-4 inches in width. It has woody, triangular stem which resembles the shape of the Pyramids. This triangular shape was beleived by the Ancient Egyptians to be a symbol of eternity. Hence the building of the Great Pyramids of Giza resembling the gateway to eternity in Ancient Mythology.
The making of the papyrus paper for writing, involves cutting the stem into lengths according to the size of the paper required, and then by peeling the outer part ( the green exterior ) away from the inner white part of the plant. The inner white part is then sliced into thin strips. Due to the amount of sugar and water contained in the strips it can not be used until the following process has been completed. The strips are individually hammered and rolled to remove access water and sugar. They are then put into pure water for about 4-7 days to remove the residue sugar. Following this they are carefully laid in vertical and horizontal crossed lines for strength, and placed between two linen sheets. Then finally put into the press for a week, for the adhesion and drying process to be completed. Once removed from the press, the paper is ready to for use. The Ancient Egyptian recorded their dairies and the records of their Victories in battles and achievments these are looked at and admired until today. Thank you for taking the time to read this page about Papyrus and we hope it was of interest to you. |
